Hello everyone! After many months of wrestling with the pros and cons of writing this post, I have decided to detail (and update) the various aspects of the upcoming MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic. Now there are hundreds, and I do mean hundreds, of guides, websites, and resources on this subject. In fact, I bet you searched Google and saw this fact for yourself. However, what I hope to carry out is to offer you (my readers) with a comprehensive guide of all the information. After contemplation, I decided to break this guide into a few sections. This makes it easier for you and easier for me. Feel free to comment and let me know what needs to be updated or added. It will go along way to keeping this a reliable source of information. This is a game review of this summer’s Xbox 360 On-demand release of Tales of Vesperia.
This is a look at how future Courtizy’s Thoughts Game Reviews will be formatted and scored. It is hoped that this format will give an easy and clean way for my readers to understand what games they want to buy.
Dungeons is a RTS (real-time strategy) game developed by Realmforge Studios that borrows its guts from Bullfrog Productions Dungeon Keeper series. Many reviews of Dungeons is one-sided, former lovers of Dungeon Keeper living for a bygone era criticizing it for not being a carbon-copy version of the 1997-1999 classic. I remember Dungeon Keeper from when I was younger, and introduced to it by my brother. I’ve always loved RTS games from the Command & Conquer series to the Empire Earth series. However, one thing has been constant. All RTS games are different, while fundamentally similar. It’s no surprise that a dungeon RTS is going to cause nostalgia to those who played Dungeon Keepers. But, criticizing Realmforge Studios for trying to turn something that would have been an exact copy into something new? Isn’t exactly letting developers dabble and try to make the genre anew. In fact, it is more than likely pushing developers away from the genre because no one wants anything different. Granted Dungeons is not perfect, but it is a start to creating something better. Trial and error has to be accepted here.
Dungeons has its flaws, such as a lackluster leveling and resource system, but it has added a whole new dynamic to the dungeon RTS style games. Instead, of trying to kill your heroes outright, as one did in Dungeon Keeper, as dungeon master your trying to fill their souls with their desires (I.E., soul energy). At which time you kill them mercilessly like the evil master you are, before locking their bodies in your prison to extract their soul energy. This to me is an excellent twist to a game design that was based on killing. Instead, designing (strategically) a dungeon that your heroes can manage to excel in, yet never leave. Heroes can in fact leave the dungeon, but they only do so once they are full. This is the time to destroy them.
The graphics of Dungeons is something that the critics could not ignore. They are not over the top, but they are spectacular. A welcome refresher to a game design stuck in Windows 98. The voice acting for the single player is also spectacular with various tongue-in-cheek dialogue on other dungeon games. For example, your single player sidekick, Mr. Sidekick, makes constant jokes including not wanting to be like the other dungeon master Diaoblo.
Where some of the game mechanics fail, the humor picks up. It’s hard to live up to a former giant, but I believe with time (and updates) Dungeons will be able to branch its on way in the dungeon RTS field.
Recommendation: 9.0/10 I recommend trying this game out. It’s not as mind-numbing as Dungeon Keeper became, but at the same time it has a steep learning curve.
Game Theory: The Passing of an Age. A look into the loss of strategic RPGs, even if it means more in-depth story telling.
Sorry for the short hiatus, but I was studying to take the new GRE. Instead, of several posts I thought I’d give a bit of a snapshot of the news coverage so far. It will span from significant findings in cancer research, the Weiner scandal and political analysis, and the unveiling of Microsoft’s interactive gaming model (Ghost Recon) and the new gaming line up from E3. These are very wide-ranging subjects, so separation will be via paragraphs.
Health -New Personalized Cancer Drugs
The first news comes in the form of significant findings in a recent cancer study that attempted to target treatment. What do I mean by target treatment? According to ABC’s Dr. Besser, research has shown that not all cancers are all-inclusive. This specifically means that, such as, all melanoma is not the same. Different mutations give birth to melanoma (so to speak), but it’s not a requirement for a specific single type. Therefore, this treatment is targeting the specific mutations that they know are in 30-60% of melanoma patients of this type. The results of this treatment were very high, 84%.*
Politics – Representative Anthony Weiner Scandal and Analysis
Next we have the Weiner Scandal. Yesterday Representative Anthony Weiner announced that he had lied to reporters, and did have relations with as many as 6 women. However, he firmly stated that he would not be resigning. Many, including family and friends, immediately ask well why not? The issue is not will he, eventually he will have to run for re-election. Democrats and Republicans both know he is unelectable in a neighborhood that is primarily orthodox Jewish and recently shifted to Republican leanings. For a little insight, you might think that the evangelical right-wingers are strict about moral issues orthodox Jews are even stricter. Especially on issues of infidelity. However, let me state here that he did not actually engage in sexual acts (such acts as “sexting” and “phone sex” are still to be determined). This brings me to the next point of why he is not resigning. Democrats are afraid to lose a seat, at least just yet (as stated before it’s almost inevitable in his district). Republicans before lost a seat because they kicked out the Sen. John Ensign for a similar scandal. In the short run, the best thing for the Democrats will be to force him to resign and focus on the larger issues. This is only going to hamper their efforts to string him along. Just look at the Google News list, its overwhelming. http://bit.ly/kz2g06
Gaming – Microsoft E3 Press Conference
E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo) is the gaming worlds mecca of expos. This is where every game developer, game designer, gaming console company… (I think you get the picture) amass to entice, awe, and excite gamers everywhere to the what they will see in the next year. This short blurb is about Microsoft’s Press Conference (below is the conference). Included is a stunning show of upcoming title returns, such as Gears of War 3, Modern Warfare 3, and the much-anticipated Halo 4. The most interesting is Microsoft’s leap with the Tom Clancy franchise of Ghost Recon to include full integration with Kinect. Meaning that every franchise of Tom Clancy’s after the new Ghost Recon will include Kinect. This includes from creating your customizable weapons (all the way down to the gas system) to shooting, which looks extremely difficult compared to what could be possible with Playstation’s Move gun system (which goes from handguns to machine guns). However, as Adam Sessler stated after the conferences the Kinect seems to be lacking in direction. I.e., Microsoft is not branding the device to a certain crowd, which makes gamers apprehensible to invest in something they don’t know where its going. The games themselves look very polished, but until you play through it one will never know how polished.
